The Commandment

We stood, our backs to the dead,

salty with battle,

some of us dying yet. 

It was satisfying, our god's victory.

 

"Thou shalt not kill," said a bloody voice,

but our backs were turned

and we could not discern whether

He smirked, or scowled, or wept.
