About Shirley Banks
Prior to becoming a Spiritual Director, Shirley was a sexuality counselor and educator for twenty-five years, during which time she provided counseling, gave presentations, and taught short courses and workshops. Shirley earned a Master of Theological Studies degree at Emory University Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, Georgia. At Candler, she wrote a thesis on the development of Buddhism in the United States. Shirley has been an Episcopalian since 1988 and has studied the Dharma (Buddhist teachings) since 2001. She chairs the Adult Spiritual Formation and Learning Committee at her Episcopal parish in Decatur, Georgia.
Shirley was born in Alaska and lived in Mexico and the American West as a child before moving to Georgia. She loves hiking, backpacking, kayaking, reading theology, and napping.
